How To Start Developing the Perfect Logo

#TBT to before the kids called the shots at home and I was employed

Before being a #SAHM I worked for a promotional product company. What's that?

The easy explanation is I help businesses, conferences, teams, events, fundraisers (you name it) put their logo on products.

I helped develop logos or design Or I worked with the logo they had and to create branded items for giveaways, uniforms, banners, swag bags, all that good stuff and more!

While working I learned a lot about logo design, uses, limitations and how they are printed.

Now I am starting something new with Chalk Couture and creating my brand and logo for my #ChalkCouture business, I have been thinking of my old job frequently.

I'm going to share with a few basic tips that hopefully will help you If you are looking to #DIY.

First, before you start developing your logo theres a few things to do or think about:

  • Talk to someone about logo use. Graphic Designers are a great help at developing and creating, but they don't always understand or know how easily that logo will work in all applications. Understanding how a logo will and can be used helps in developing your own.

  • THINK BIG! When you develop your logo, think of your #future. What are you goals for you brand? Create something that will stand the test of time and be recognizable. You want to consider that in the future you could want to use it in a place or way that you weren't went you started off. As your business grows your logo use will grow too.

While a bright busy full coloured logo can look really super awesome, if you want to put that on a pen you'll have to use something different.

Think of all the big brands you know and their logos that can be recognize anywhere, including Chalk Couture.

What do they all have in common? They're simple. Simple isn't bad. Simple can still be catchy and elegant, simple is recognizable and memorable.

Just because a logo is simple, does not mean its boring

Logo Printing: a quick explanation.

Often, when a logo is being printed it's in layers of individual layers. Think about Chalk Couture how you create finished pieces . You use silk screens. You apply one layer at a time and a single colour at a time. Logos are printed with the same process, with screens and inks in single layers.

maybe right now you're just using it on your socials, but in the future - If you want it more places, be ready for that! Have a versatile design.

Ok.... On to the logo itself. Below is the Logo I developed for Small Town Chalkaholics.

Create a logo with clean lines, simple colours and that can be created into a one colour version if possible

1. Think about what you love. You have business name, what's your brand? - what do you represent? You can develop your brand with just your business name, but if you want to add a logo, have it represent you and the brand.

For my Chalk Couture logo, Small Town Chalkaholics, I love the Prairies - I love my small town. That is represented in my brand and logo - because that is me.

2. Love your colours. You want colours that compliment each other and make your logo pop. Consider having 2 main colours. You can always have an alternate colour too. I switch the colour of my wheat logo depending on where I'm using it from pink to teal.

You will always be using the same colours, so make sure you love them! current trends are fun - but they always change. You want to be consistent.

3. Looks matter. don't over crowd your design! Sleek, simple, clean lines. This goes back to where do you see you logo being printed?

If you develop a fun and eye catching logo that can easily be converted to a one colour print - than you, my friend are golden! (see my logo above for an example)

4. Size Matters. Not everything can be printed everywhere. Many places and items have a specific print areas or sizes. If you have small text - will it be printable if it has to be sized down? Give space to everything so they can be large enough and clear enough.

These are just my tips from experience and I really hope that you find the, helpful.

In the end - you do you and create something you love!
